This amazing and absolutely breath taking Kirk Repousse pattern sterling silver landscape and castle themed tea & coffee service sold at Heritage Auctions on May 16th, 2023 for $35,000 with buyers premium. The set weighs 182.619 troy ounces which makes the purchase rate per troy ounce at $191.65.
I personally wanted the set for our Silver Museum and since the set had a monogram, I had put in a bid for around $60.00 per troy ounce. A monogram usually lowers the value by about 30-50%.
I was hugely surprised that the set sold for $191.65 per troy ounce. I had seen similar ones sell at auction for around $80-$100 per ounce un-monogrammed. There are also an abundance of ones currently available as of this writing on Ebay and other auction sites where the asks are in the $75 - $90 per ounce range.
However............... I will have to say that this particular architectural repousse silver service was of particular aesthetic beauty like none we've seen in recent years. Each piece of this set is decorated with its own unique scene and all the pieces together combine to create one master work of a story book fairy tale landscape. It also included a rare hot water kettle on stand.
I think the buyer probably paid too much, but if you have to go overboard at an auction, this item was definitely one worth splurging on. It will remain to be seen if this is just a market anomaly or if this establishes a new benchmark price for the long term.
In the meanwhile, I will keep my eyes open for the next great castles and landscape sterling coffee set. Hopefully, at the next auction, there will fewer buyers and ones that don't fall in love with the same piece that I want.
